The Shoebill is one of Africa’s most fascinating birds. Standing up to 1.5 metres tall, this prehistoric-looking giant gets its name from its enormous shoe-shaped bill. Despite its intimidating appearance, the Shoebill is a patient hunter, often standing motionless for long periods before striking at fish, frogs, and even small reptiles with remarkable precision.
Found in the wetlands of East and Central Africa, the Shoebill is famous for its piercing stare and distinctive bill-clattering display. Seeing one in the wild is a truly unforgettable wildlife experience.

Mouse lemurs are the world’s smallest primates and are found only in Madagascar. Despite their tiny size — some weighing less than 60 grams — they are incredibly agile nocturnal hunters, feeding on insects, fruit, nectar, and tree sap. Their enormous eyes are perfectly adapted for life in the dark forests of Madagascar.
Some mouse lemur species are still relatively common locally, while others are critically endangered with only a few thousand — or even just hundreds — thought to remain in the wild. Conservationists consider Madagascar one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots because over 90% of its wildlife occurs nowhere else on Earth.

Roan are the second biggest antelope
(after the eland) on Africa and their barrel-chested,
horse-like build does indeed give them
a powerful appearance. Named for their
reddish colour, roan are sometimes
mistaken for the darker sable. Their
Afrikaans name bastergemsbok (‘bastard
gemsbok’) relates to the distinctive
gemsbok-like black-and-white facial
markings, but their distinctive fringed ears
give them a comically startled appearance.
Even these unique appendages remain
an evolutionary mystery, though it is
possible that they might provide protection
in the Highveld habitat, where winter
