Area : Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa known for its dramatic landscape and diverse wildlife, much of it within parks, reserves and safari areas. On the Zambezi River, Victoria Falls make a thundering 108m drop into narrow Batoka Gorge, where there’s white-water rafting and bungee-jumping. Downstream are Matusadona and Mana Pools national parks, home to hippos, rhinos and birdlife.

WEATHER


Climate : Although located in the tropics, temperate conditions prevail all year, as the climate is moderated by altitude and the inland position of the country. The hot and dry season is from August to October, and the rainy season from November to March.

When to Go : Zimbabwe can be visited any time of the year. The best game viewing time is in the dry season, May to October, when animals congregate around the rivers and waterholes. This is especially true in Hwange where the artificially pumped waterholes attract many animals, including big herds of elephants. The best time to see Victoria Falls is from May through September.

HOW TO GET THERE


Zimbabwe’s International Airports : Harare International Airport (code: HRE) lies 7 miles (12 km) southeast of Harare.

Getting to Zimbabwe : By air, visitors usually arrive in Harare, or Victoria Falls. Regional flights service the small Victoria Falls airport, and Air Zimbabwe and KLM service Harare from Europe. Most long haul visitors stop in Johannesburg en route to Zimbabwe.

Victoria Falls : – This waterfall is the largest in the world, and the most unusual shape, even has a collection of the most diverse fauna that exist in a waterfall area. Mosi-oa-Tunya (meaning “the smoke that thunders”) is the name commonly used local residents, while Scottish explorer David Livingstone named it after Queen Victoria. This waterfall has a width of 1.7 kilometers and an altitude of 108 meters (360 feet), forming one of the of the largest waterfalls in the world.

Great Zimbabwe : Great Zimbabwe is one of sub-Saharan Africa’s most important and largest stone ruins. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1986, the large towers and structures were built out of millions of stones balanced perfectly on top of one another without the aid of mortar.

Zambezi National Park : – The riverine sections are particularly picturesque and the wildlife abundant. A good spot for a canoeing safari.

Chinhoyi Caves : – apart from being a great attraction on its own for feasting the eye, these caves also conceal an underground lake found 50 meters below the ground surface.

Hwange National Park : – Zimbabwe’s largest National Park and home to one of the highest concentration of game, especially elephants

Matobo National Park : – noted for its spectacular granite rock formations and its wealth of ancient rock paintings. Cecil Rhodes’ tomb can be visited at Malindidzimu (View of the World). The Nswatugi and Pomongwe caves are also worth visiting.

Mana Pools : – located on the southern bank of the Zambezi, one of Zimbabwe’s most popular parks with a wide range of large mammals and over 350 bird species. The park stretches across prime Zambezi riverfront vegetation, much of which is only accessible on foot and as a result is completely unspoiled. Needless to say, the area offers intensely exciting walking safaris, especially for the more experienced safari enthusiasts. To add another dimension to your safari, explore the park from the river on one of the canoe safaris.

Lake Kariba : – the world’s largest manmade dam. Both the game and the stellar sunsets can be viewed from the comfort of various waterfront lodges, or from well-appointed cruise vessels and self-contained houseboats.
