La Clé Des Montagnes

La Clé des Montagnes (‘key to the mountains’) features four individually designed villas, created to meet the requirements of the very upper end of the market. The property is the brainchild of international entrepreneur Michael Pawlowski, an active member of the Franschhoek community since relocating here from Europe in 2007.

Set on a piece of land that stretches across six hectares and includes a working plum and wine farm, the rolling lawns, tranquil gardens and private pools cater to couples, friends and families seeking the privacy, space and mod-cons of a private home, yet with a 24-hour concierge and butler. With expansive indoor and outdoor spaces, fully equipped kitchens and a ‘home-away-from-home’ feel, the villas lend themselves to entertaining. Services range from private chefs and child-minders, to helicopter transfers and golf excursions – and anything and everything in-between.

Explains General Manager Peggy Klement: "Multigenerational travel is one of the biggest emerging trends across the globe, along with guests demanding space, privacy and discreet service. What we offer at La Clé is so much more than a hotel room – this is a top of the range villa product designed to meet the needs and expectations of the modern traveller. We are receiving a lot of interest in extended stays, for guests wanting to make Franschhoek their base while exploring the Cape Winelands and Cape Town."

Cape Town interior designer Sarah Ord has created a collage of heritage, fabrics and objets d’art for La Clé,  referencing her signature style and personal interpretation of the light, colours, landscapes and culture of South Africa. The four custom-designed villas La Grange, Le Manoir, La Galerie and Le Colonial feature the same DNA but have very different personality traits – each one comes with a completely different look and feel. Distinctive pieces of avant-garde furniture, colonial splendour, hand selected artworks and a healthy sprinkling of South African design make for an intriguing combination of contemporary and traditional décor. Sarah Ord’s vivid tableware collection can be found in each villa, showcasing her devotion to saturated colour and vibrant pattern in crockery, glassware, cutlery and table linen.

At La Clé des Montagnes guests are able to experience living on a working wine farm, with vineyards reflecting the changing seasons and culminating in the annual harvest in the South African summer months.

Guests get special access to the secrets of Franschhoek through the Concierge service. La Clé’s crafted list of activities has been handpicked to showcase Franschhoek’s finest hidden gems and secret spots, and to reveal tastes, vistas and experiences that you’re unlikely to find in tourism brochures.
