Some hotels pride themselves on being “a home away from home”. Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa – not so much. As soon as one sets foot on this awe-inspiring property, they are teleported to many different worlds simultaneously, with home but a distant memory.

Established in November 1997, Fairlawns is one of Johannesburg’s original five-star boutique hotels. Once owned by the Little Brenthurst Trust of the Oppenheimer family, this impressive, five-and-a-half-hectare property exudes a park-like ambience with all the modern conveniences required by world-class travelers.

In the heart of South Africa’s richest business district, Fairlawns is surrounded by lavish residences and towering shopping malls. However, it is the tranquility of the private rolling gardens with majestic age-old trees and prolific birdlife, amongst a million other reasons, which sets Fairlawns apart.

With its 12 newly refurbished Courtyard Suites, including two inspired by the arts and culture of North and West Africa, the establishment has given new life to its historic design. The Morocco and Burkina Faso-inspired suites are perfect for the discerning traveler looking to be transported to a contemporary “African destination”, as it brings quintessential Africa to the forefront.

Each suite, approximately 54 square meters in size individually, is decorated with a specific theme in mind and is named accordingly, lending unique elements of fun to each space. All of the 12 Courtyard Suites have been given a complete renovation, and no two rooms are the same when it comes to style and design inspiration.

The “Marrakech” suite is inspired by the famous African country, Morocco, and its interior design reflects a melting pot of influences, characterized by intricate carvings, arched doorways and colorful splashes reminiscent of the ocean. The room is a coherent, light and airy space that features encaustic tiles, a main design element reminiscent of the floors of the Marrakech Museum, which run from the bedroom into the spacious bathroom.
The suite also features copper artefacts, with a bold copper chandelier as the anchor, and fun turquoise nuances like chairs and a writing bureau which symbolizes the color copper turns when it oxidizes. A plush couch, cushions with geometric patterns and lantern-style lights complete this other-worldly destination.

Moving to the west side of the African continent, the “Burkina Faso” suite takes guests on a trip to a destination famous for its eclectic, modern African fashion, ancient art, cultural masks and fishing baskets.
Made of leaves, straw, wood and textile, the masks which Burkina Faso are famous for symbolize the worship of ancestors and spirits. The natural components of these masks can be found throughout the suite, giving it a soft, natural yet luxurious, and calming atmosphere. The room also has bold and contemporary design elements, with a heavy cast iron bath and encaustic tiles stealing the show.

Previously a luxury private residence, it is only fitting that the property has transformed “herself” into the stylish hotel, with an air of eclectic sophistication, that Fairlawns is today.

Conveniently located just 6km from central Sandton, and 20km from the Johannesburg city center, Fairlawns provides upmarket travelers with the perfect sanctuary from the bustling city. Whether you want to experience Africa at its best, or if you’re looking for European charm, Fairlawns’ luxurious suites have all been carefully crafted, every piece and element handpicked and placed with the most amount of care, to take you on an unexpected journey to far off places…home but a mere distant memory.
